Popular
medical doctor and health influencer Dr Chinonso Egemba (also known as Aproko
Doctor) has revealed that he was recently diagnosed and treated for a brain
tumour. He made this known through a video on YouTube where he discussed the
illness and all it did to him.
I have been fighting for my life. It happened that on the 5th of December, I was diagnosed with a craniopharyngioma, which happens to be a brain tumour.
The
video he shared captured moments after his brain surgery when he was held out
of the operating room. He recalled that the tumour was sitting close to his
pituitary gland, which generally affected his eyesight. At a point, he could no
longer see clearly with his left eye.
The
funny doctor who always encourages Nigerians to lead a good life remarked that
he had no idea that he would survive. Yet he went about creating health content
throughout December when he was fighting for his own life.
A touching part of the video was when he recounted how a Twitter user
"bantered" him for one of his health videos that if he does not live long
after creating all the health content, it would be a shame. Dr Egemba said the
statement kept ringing in his head while battling for his life.
The cause of brain tumour.
It is
important to note that the cause of such a brain tumour that affected Aproko
Doctor will be extremely difficult to ascertain. There could be speculations
around lifestyle, genes, or similar things, but those will require additional
tests.
In Dr
Egemba's case, he noted that he lived a healthy life to the best of his
ability. He does not smoke, and neither does he take excess alcohol or eat
junk. He remarked that his siblings even called him goat because he mainly ate
salad, just as he exercised regularly.
So why
a brain tumour? Why him? The answer is that no one knows, and it could happen
to anyone.
On
Pressure to go outside the country for the surgery.
Dr
Egemba spoke about the Pressure he got from people who encouraged him to go
outside the country for the surgery. He mentioned, however, that it was a
matter of trust, and he trusted Nigerian doctors more.
He
eventually got the brain surgery done at Lagoon hospital Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria.
The team that did the surgery was led by Dr Tayo Ojo, a consultant
Neurosurgeon here in Nigeria.

Aproko Doctor specifically took to his Twitter account to appreciate Dr Ojo's effort toward the success of the surgery while also calling for more investment in the health sector. He said,
"It was Dr Tayo Ojo, a neurosurgeon here in Nigeria, that did the surgery. So many people begged me to leave the country and get the surgery done, but something kept me back here because I still had trust in us. We just need more investment in our health sector".
We
kindly wish Aproko Doctor a quick recovery and all the best in his future
endeavours. He's one of the patriotic voices left in the health sector.
