10 Therapeutic Songs to Lift You from A Depressed Mood

If you follow the trend worldwide, you will know that most things are not working as they should. Governments are sloppy and full of bad policies; inflation, high cost of living, terrorism, and violence are brewing and spreading like wildfire, just as gainful employment and general standard of living have significantly dropped.

Therapeutic songs to lift you from a depressed mood

As someone who visits social media almost daily, you are most likely absorbing some of this bad news (or even fake news), and your mental health could be affected. You may not appreciate the extent to which you’re affected, but it could be enormous. As if those are not enough, the war in Ukraine with a resultant humanitarian crisis is making it seem like we have all lost the true essence of humanity.

You need some time to engage in other, more meaningful activities. Some of these activities include going to the beach, taking a lonely walk down the gardens or the street, visiting friends, or just sitting and listening to good music. You need to take a break once in a while and care for your mental health.

Listening to music can be a route to getting yourself into a better mood. It is becoming increasingly clear that there is much more to the benefits of music than just a quick boost for your outlook. Some research show that music profoundly affects your body and psyche. There’s a growing healthcare field known as music therapy, which uses music to heal.

Therefore it has become paramount that I recommend some therapeutic songs to help lift you from a depressed mood. These songs cut across all genres, from hip-hop, pop, RnB, and afro-beats to religious songs. The aim is to help the reader find songs in the various genres that appeal to them. It’s a fun-packed list, so let’s hop in and help you with good songs to lift you from a depressed mood.

1.    Logic ft Lucy Rose - Anziety

If you love rap, then this song will be ideal for you. The other beauty of the song is that Logic told his personal story through anxiety, and the song was adopted by the American National Suicide prevention lifeline (1-800-273-8255)

In a YouTube video, logic (Sir Robert Bryson Hall II) talked about all he passed through, and it’s just inspiring because often, we tend to forget that some of our idols pass through tough times too. It is the same way people may ignore your real challenges just because you often post good pictures on the gram.

 Some of the notable lyrics of the song include:

“Everything is fine; everything is so fine

Everything is fine; everything is so fine

Cause I'm good, so good

Cause I'm good, so good, so good

I wish you would; I wish you would

I wish you would; I wish you would

I wish you would; this is my life

This is my all; this is my all

And now I'm happy, right now I'm happy, but sometimes” .....

Anziety by Logic and Lucy Rose comes topmost on the songs we recommend for you if you’re in a low mood or have anxiety. It is undoubtedly one of those songs to lift you from a depressed mood. Listen and tell us about it.

2.    Demi Lovato – Still have me.

The lyrics of this powerful song begin like this

“I'm a mess, and I'm still broken

But I'm finding my way back

And it feels like someone's stolen

All the light I ever had

Like the world disappeared

And I'm lying right here

While the silence is piercing

And it hurts to breathe

I don't have much, but at least I still have me (I still have me)

And that's all I need

So, take my faith, but at least I still believe (I still believe)

And that's all I need

I don't have much, but at least I still have me”...

With lyrics like the above, you will know that the song suits a depressed mood. First of all, it helps you recognize and appreciate that you’re currently in a not-so-good state, then it reminds you that even if you don’t have anything left, you still have yourself. It gives you a sense of belonging, a self-boost, and a reason to fight for yourself. This and more make it claim the second spot easily.

Demi Lovato is an American singer, and songwriter. Her genres include pop, RnB, and pop rock. Like Logic, Demi too suffered from a severe mental breakdown which even led her to dial 911 from her residence and was rushed to the hospital. Her song is full of inspiration, relates to what an average adult suffers from, and will help boost your confidence in yourself.

3.    Meher Zain – Insha Allah

Meher Zain is a Lebanese-Swedish R&B singer, songwriter, and music producer. His song Insha Allah is one that everyone, irrespective of religion or even mood, must listen to. Once you’re a lover of good music, then this track is definitely for you.

Notable lyrics from the song include;

“Every time

You feel like you cannot go on

You feel so lost and that you're so alone

All you see is night

And darkness all around

You feel so helpless you can't see which way to go

Don't despair

And never lose hope

'Cause Allah is always by your side

Insha Allah

You'll find your way”...

The song is slow, soothing, and pleasant to the ear. It is highly recommended any time, any day. Do well to listen to it and invite your friends and loved ones.

4.    Cobhams Asuquo ft Simi – We plenti

Cobhams Asuquo is a Nigerian musician, Producer, and songwriter. With several successes in the music industry, both locally and internationally, Cobhams remains one of the celebrities you probably won’t remember that they have an impairment.

The fact that Cobhams is visually impaired and still phenomenal with musical instruments, producing wonderful songs yearly, is enough for someone to be motivated. Hence, including this track in the list of songs to lift you from a depressed mood shouldn’t be surprising.

Be that as it may, “We Plenti” reminds you that you should take it easy on yourself and that everyone else is fighting the same battle to survive. The particular line ‘Nobi only you kill Jesus’ reiterates the fact that you’re not the only one that is guilty of any crime or that is suffering. ‘We Plenti for here’ further assures you that we’re plenty in the struggle and will pull through.

Some notable lyrics of the song well delivered in pidgin/Nigerian English include;

“You don hustle tire, you no dey take holiday.

You write application, you go for auditions but still

E be like say e no dey pay

Them don laugh you tire

Some say shey until your mate get aeroplane before you go make am

You beg God to make am but see

Everybody get lane

So my brother hustle, so my sister work

No condition last forever your own turn dey come

So my brother hustle, so my sister work o

Beans no dey cook forever, your own beans go done

If you see person wey make am o rejoice with them

If them ask you what's your own no take no offence

See this life na turn by turn o your time dey come because

No be only you kill Jesus we plenty for there”

Again, a song of this caliber, with the beautiful vocals of our talented Simi, can never go wrong. I strongly advise that you jump on this song right now, not just because it is one of those songs to lift you from a depressed mood, but even more because it is a beautiful song you can listen to.

5.    Cold Play – Miracles (someone special) with Big Sean

When the Cold Play group makes music, it’s always something special. Well, this particular track is not just unique, it was made for someone special, and that person is you. The introductory lyrics are inspiring enough and have some of the notable lines below;

“My father said never give up, son

Just look how good Cassius become

Muhammad, Mahatma, and Nelson

Not scared to be strong

Now you could run and just say they're right

No, I'll never be no one in my whole life

Or you could turn and say no, wait, they're wrong

And get to keep on dancing all lifelong.”

Aside from this track being a soft tune (like you would always expect from this influential musician band), you are likely also to enjoy the cool rap from Big Sean. Some spectacular lines stood out for me. The part he added the lines below was so super cool;

“Prove it to them, or you prove it to yourself, but honestly, it's better if you do it for yourself.”

So the big question is, do you want to prove anything to the world, or do you want to prove it to yourself? I would go with the latter; at least I will be within fewer deadlines and expectations that could further mess with my mental health.

6.    Hanson – Mmmbop

Hanson is an American pop rock band from Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States, formed by brothers Isaac Hanson (guitar, vocals, bass, piano), Taylor Hanson (keyboards, vocals, percussion), and Zac Hanson (drums, vocals, piano). They are best known for the 1997 hit song “Mmmbop” from their debut album released through Mercury/Polygram Records, entitled Middle of Nowhere, which earned three Grammy nominations.

You can dance to this track with very nice lyrics, and undoubtedly one of the songs to lift you from a low mood. It is highly recommended for people with occasional low moods or pronounced depression. It is a 90s classic to which you stand a good chance of grooving. Listen to this track, and rest assured that it will bring good echoes and vibes to your ears.

7.    Anne Marie – Perfect for me

Anne-Marie Rose Nicholson, better known as Anne-Marie, is an English singer and songwriter. She has attained several charting singles on the UK Singles Chart, including Clean Bandit’s “Rockabye,” featuring Sean Paul, which peaked at number one, as well as “Alarm,” “Ciao Adios,” “Friends,” “2002,” and “Don’t Play.”

Anne carefully put out the song “perfect for me” to promote self-confidence. So, it is not just ordinarily one of the songs to lift you from a depressed mood; it does, even more, reassure you that you’re perfect for yourself.

Nothing is as important as having positive energy, especially in an environment with many negativities. Anne-Marie’s Perfect for me fills you with this much-needed energy; don’t miss out on this one.

Some classy lyrics here include;

“Don't feel like putting makeup on my cheeks

Do what I wanna

Love every single part of my body

Top to the bottom

I'm not a supermodel from a magazine, mmh-mmh

I'm okay with not being perfect

'Cause that's perfect to me.”

8.    Burna boy – Level up (Twice as Tall)

You know this list should contain at least one track from the African giant, don’t you? Well, it’s not just about being the African giant or winning the Grammy as a Nigerian; it is more of the fact that the story of Burna boy as a musician is inspiring.

Once in the limelight around 2013 with tracks such as ‘Like to party,’ Burna subsequently declined from both the local and international scenes. It was not till around 2018, with tracks such as ‘Ye,’ that he resurfaced again. He was making music before this time, but they didn’t have many international breakthroughs; some may even argue locally.

But he didn’t stop there; he released a classic album, “African Giant,” in 2019, which saw his nomination for the Grammy’s as the best international album, alongside the legendary Angelina Kidjo. But Burna boy didn’t win that year, so he went back and made an even better album ‘Twice as Tall’ which later won him a Grammy the subsequent year for the same category.

One of the tracks in the Twice as tall album is ‘Level Up’ where he practically talked about his journey through life and the Grammy. The song is an inspiration because it reminds you that everyone is fighting a battle. Moreover, it gives hope to the average person to believe in their dreams and aspirations.

Level up is a song you must listen to, not just because it admonishes you not to be afraid to step into your greatness but also reminds you that life is a journey and it’s not over yet for anyone. You have to fight hard till you win for win, you shall.

9.    Cold Play – Fix you

Are you surprised that Cold Play is making the list again? Well, don’t be. A band like theirs can make magic each time they put out an album. Fix you is one of those magics that not only soothe the ear but also give you hope.

Some notable lyrics here include;

“When you try your best, but you don't succeed

When you get what you want but not what you need

When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep

Stuck in reverse

and the tears come streaming down your face

When you lose something, you can't replace

When you love someone, but it goes to waste

Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home

And ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you.”

With the lyrics above, you’re sure that this song can fix you. Again, as earlier suggested, Cold Play is the best thing that happened to alternative pop music. Listen to this track and their albums, and you will never regret it.

10. Fireboy – Wait and see

Fireboy is a sensational Nigerian singer, signed to Olamide Badoo’s record label, YBNL. Since his announcement, he has become one of the best things that happened to the YBNL Nation, which solely prides itself as the voice of the street.

This track tells you to face your demons, look your doubters in the face, and then prove them wrong. It was one of my significant tracks in 2018 when I almost slept on the streets of Lagos because of accommodation issues. This song is highly recommended. It saved and served me. Listen to it and give me your review.

Bonus track

11. Ladipoe ft BNXN - Feeling

Do you know that saying about saving the best for the last? You will feel that when you listen to this track- Feeling by Ladipoe. Released in 2021, this song has gone to the top of various charts in Africa and outside. Therefore, topmost among the songs to lift you from a depressed mood is this Ladipoe’s Feeling, but it’s not just that; this song sums up all we’re trying to preach in this article.

This write-up is about exposing you to 10 therapeutic songs to lift you from a depressed mood with the hope that you will get some good feelings at the end. When you eventually do, it becomes paramount to appreciate how good you feel with Ladipoe’s "feeling."

Hence, the lyrics of the song sum it all up when it says;

I like the way I’m feeling now

No come use your Reggae spoil my blues and rhythm now

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

I like the way I’m feeling now

Omo e get small thing weh dey stress me, but right now I’m chilling now

Oh oh oh oh oh oh

I hope you continue to exude positive energy for yourself and the people around you. It is not a fair world, but you can’t drown only in the negativity. There are many things to be grateful for and many other good things to live for. Hang in there, and we are all going to be fine at the end of it all
